He named his new spirit Curacao, but his good friend Cesar Ritz, the founder of the eponymous hotel, suggested that Grand Marnier would be "a grand name for a grand liqueur". Changing the bottle shape to one inspired by the silhouette of the traditional Cognac stills, Louis-Alexandre's invention became the belle of La Belle Epoque and is still loved to this very day.
